Ingredient Notes
Full ingredient measurements and instructions can be found in the recipe card below.
- Butter: I like to use salted, but unsalted is fine also.
- Sugars: Using both sugars allows for a perfect chewy cookie with a slightly crispy edge.
- Flour: Weigh your flour if possible, and if you don't have a scale lightly scoop your flour into your measuring cup, making sure it's not too compact.
- Chocolate Chips: I used semi-sweet, but the basic dough lends itself to any flavor of chip you prefer.
- Flaked Salt: I love topping my cookies with a bit of salt to help balance the sweetness.

Step by Step Instructions

Step 1: Place the butter and sugars in a large mixing bowl. Beat on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, 3 to 4 minutes. Add egg and vanilla and mix again.

Step 2: Slowly mix in baking powder, baking soda, salt and flour being careful not to over mix. Fold in the chocolate chips.

Step 3: Scoop the dough into a 2 teaspoon size ball and roll into a long rolled shape about 3 inches long.

Step 4: Then roll a second one and attach the two at the bottom to form a "V" shape. Repeating these steps for all the hearts.

Step 5: Place 6-8 shaped hearts per cookie sheet. Place a few more chocolate chips along the top and sprinkle with some flaked salt.

Step 6: Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges start to turn golden brown. If you need to reshape the heart at all after baking, simply run a butter knife around the cookie while it is still hot.
Expert Baking Tips
- Your dough will shape best if your butter is still slightly cold when starting. You don't want it to be so firm that you can't push into it at all, but also not totally room temperature.
- I highly suggest putting chocolate chips along the top before baking. It seems to help show the shape of the heart better.
- I have given both cups and grams as measurements. Grams will be more precise, especially when measuring flour. If you don’t have a kitchen scale, no problem! Just lightly spoon flour into your measuring cup to insure its not packed in there. Light and fluffy is the key.

FAQ
