Heart Shaped Chocolate Chip Cookies

Brooke Homec
These heart shaped chocolate chip cookies are perfect to make for Valentine's Day, or just to show someone that you love them. They're a simple chewy cookie that can be made in less than 30 minutes, and does not require a cookie cutter.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup (113.5 g) salted butter
  • ½ cup (110 g) brown sugar
  • ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoon (2 teaspoon) vanilla
  • ½ teaspoon (0.5 teaspoon) baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon (0.5 teaspoon) baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon (0.5 teaspoon) salt
  • cups (210 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (180 g) chocolate chips
  • flaked salt for topping

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 365 F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
  • Place the butter and sugars in a large mixing bowl. Beat on medium-high speed until light and fluffy, 3 to 4 minutes.
  • Add egg and vanilla and mix again.
  • Slowly mix in baking powder, baking soda, salt and flour being careful not to over mix. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  • Scoop the dough into a 2 teaspoon size ball and roll into a long rolled shape about 3 inches long.
  • Then roll a second one and attach the two at the bottom to form a "V" shape. Repeating these steps for all the hearts.
  • Place 6-8 shaped hearts per cookie sheet. Place a few more chocolate chips along the top and sprinkle with some flaked salt.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges start to turn golden brown. If you need to reshape the heart at all after baking, simply run a butter knife around the cookie while it is still hot.

Notes

Your dough will shape best if your butter is still cold when starting. You don't want it to be so firm that you can't push into it at all, but also not totally room temperature.
There is no chilling required for this dough, but I still like to if I have the time. It always helps to lend itself to a slightly better flavored cookie, and also helps with the spreading.
I have given both cups and grams as measurements. Grams will be more precise, especially when measuring flour. If you don’t have a kitchen scale, no problem! Just lightly spoon flour into your measuring cup to insure its not packed in there. Light and fluffy is the key.
