Ingredient Notes
Full ingredient measurements and instructions can be found in the recipe card below.
- Chocolate: I usually make these with chopped dark chocolate for an extra rich chocolate flavor. But semi-sweet or even milk chocolate will work.
- Butter: I always use salted butter in my recipes.
- Sugar: You will use both granulated and brown sugar in these cookies.
- Eggs: You will use eggs and a yolk in these cookies.
- Cocoa Powder: I used dutch process, but any unsweetened cocoa powder will work. You can also use black cocoa powder for more of an oreo taste.

Step by Step Instructions

- Step 1: Start by melting the butter and chocolate together in the microwave. I start with 30 seconds and then stir, continue in 15 second intervals until melted.

- Step 2: In a medium mixing bowl, mix together both sugars, eggs and vanilla on high for 3-4 minutes. Fold melted chocolate and butter in. Whisk in baking powder, salt, flour and cocoa powder.

- Step 3: Scoop into 3 tablespoon sized balls and place on baking sheets, with no more than 8 cookie balls per sheet.

- Step 4: Bake for 10-12 minutes. They will crackle along the top. As soon as you pull them out of the oven sprinkle with flaked salt. Allow to cool.
Expert Baking Tips
- The darker the chocolate the richer the cookie, so choose according to your own preference.
- The dough will seem sticky, but that is how it's supposed to be.
- I have given both cups and grams as measurements. Grams will be more precise, especially when measuring flour. If you don’t have a kitchen scale, no problem! Just lightly spoon flour into your measuring cup to insure its not packed in there. Light and fluffy is the key.
